Local Research Key In Slowing Down Leukaekmia in Children
September 17, 2018
The road to recovery for a child battling cancer is not always a clear cut path.
For a great deal of families it often involves numerous twists and turns.
Leukemia is one of the most common and deadly forms of cancer affecting children below the age of 21. As a result, Dr Rishi Kotecha, a pediatric leukemia specialist at Perth Children’s Hospital has employed a team of researchers to develop a treatment to slow the progression of leukemia in children.
Their findings have identified a signal produced by leukemia cells which instructs neighboring cells to eat away at bones.
In order to counteract this they had tested a commercially available drug, zoledronic acid. This drug not only helped to reduce bone fragility caused by leukemia, but slowed the progression of this cancer.
